The 4pm call test: what we do before we touch your account

Before we sign a client, we call their office the way a customer would. What happens next tells us more than any audit.

Before we send a proposal, we call the business. Not the owner. The main line, at 4pm on a weekday, the way a homeowner with a leaking water heater would.

About a third of the time nobody answers. Some of the rest go to a voicemail that does not mention the company name. A few ring through to someone who has clearly been interrupted.

Why it matters more than the account

An account can be perfect and still lose money if the call is not answered. Google charges for the click either way. In a plumbing account with $75 clicks and a 30% answer gap, that is more wasted money in a week than a month of management fees.

The test also tells us what the account is optimizing toward. If the phone is not answered, the conversions Google is learning from are the wrong ones, and the cheapest fix is not in the campaign at all.

What we do with the result

  • If calls go unanswered, we set up missed-call text-back and a staffed line before launch, and call ads only run during staffed hours.
  • If the answer is slow or unclear, we write a one-page intake script with the two questions that book the job.
  • If the office is fine, we say so, and the plan moves straight to tracking and structure.

We put the result in the growth plan, whether or not it is flattering. An account cannot be judged without it.

Run it yourself

Call your own business at 4pm on a Tuesday from a number the office does not know. Count the rings. Listen to how the greeting sounds. Ask for a price. You will learn more in three minutes than from a month of reports.
