Performance Max is the campaign type most agencies switch on first and most owners regret. It is not the campaign’s fault. It does exactly what it is told, and most accounts tell it the wrong thing.
What it optimizes toward
Performance Max buys whatever produces the conversions it can see, across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps. If the account counts form fills, it will find the cheapest form fills on the internet. If it counts booked jobs with values, it will find people who book.
That is the whole rule. Do not switch it on until booked jobs are flowing back into the account as offline conversions with values, and there are at least thirty of them a month for it to learn from.
When it earns its place
- Planned, high-value services: replacements, implants, roofs, estate plans, generator installs. Photo-led services where a visual reaches the right person before they search.
- Accounts with clean tracking and a few months of booked-job data.
- Budgets big enough that search is saturated and there is money left to test.
When it does not
- Emergency services. A burst pipe is booked the same day; Performance Max produces slow, low-intent leads for it.
- Accounts still counting form fills or twelve-second calls as conversions.
- Small budgets, where every dollar belongs in exact-match search and Local Services Ads.
How we fence it
One asset group per service with real job photos, brand exclusions so it cannot cannibalise your own name, search themes that keep it on your services, lead-form questions that filter price shoppers, and a monthly comparison of cost per booked job against search. If it cannot match search inside two months, it is paused.
Send your account and Hamid will show you the five changes that would move your cost per booked job the most. Request the plan.
